Larry might have been the first friend that Fifi ever made upon her arrival to Paldea, as she had originally worked and lived in Medali before moving to Mesagoza. The title of "very best friend" appears to be self-appointed by Fifi, but the passing years show that he soon begins to reciprocate that notion towards her, albeit in his own way. Fifi seems to uphold a (self-appointed) tradition to have dinner together with him at least once a week at the Treasure Eatery as when they first met, she would constantly run into him. He doesn't always offer much to say in response to her discussions, but picks up on details. She considers him to be a great listener. Despite her propensity to speak enthusiastically, she has learned how to speak more softly and calmly with him, without diminishing her passion for her favorite discussion topics. In her past, she would have loved to have a friend to just unload her both her happiness and woes to. This plays a big factor as to why she eventually fell for him, in addition to his battle skill.He found her befuddling, but knew she wasn't loud on purpose and was able to catch on to when her energy was a farce, especially after she had long shifts at work. She found him more quiet than she was used to, but she greatly appreciated when he firmly but politely told her to quiet down when she got to be too much. (Throughout most of her life, she was shunned rudely for being passionate about her hobbies). From there she gets better at understanding and matching his energy & mannerisms. Their friendship starts off quietly and cordially, but Fifi grows comfortable with sharing snippets of her day and eventually going on long winded diatribes about her special interests, much to his chagrin. Whenever she has something she can't really discuss with her friends at the academy, he is usually the one she ends up (drunkenly) pouring her heart out to for better or worse. She did not know anything about his roles in the Pokemon League until after she takes on the Gym Challenge.Through the course of her Gym Challenge, Fifi manages to uphold her promise to meet with Larry for their dinners, though she begins to feel somewhat different around him upon realizing that he works for the Paldea League. After she loses to him the initial time she takes her Champion's assessment, she begins to feel smaller and timid around him, feeling like a weak nuisance, so she takes a siesta from dinners at Treasure in the meantime. After a brief respite (chaperoning a field trip in Kitakami, and touring Blueberry Academy), she finds that one of the main reasons she took her loss to him so hard was because she looked up to his skill (his lack of motivation be damned). She was beginning to see him as both an important friend, and something beyond that.Upon Fifi's initial confession, the two of them pondered if either of them were suited for a romance. Fifi reflected on her traumas attributed to previous negative relationships. Larry felt unsuited for a relationship as he had expressed little interest and desire for one throughout the course of his life, causing disappointments in the previous relationships he did have. Both felt they would be too busy due to their different jobs. Fifi suggests taking things slow, or even agreeing to stay close and seeing how things develop, to which he tentatively agreed. Fifi was surprised by how comfortable she felt in such a simple relationship, where things felt more or less the same as they had been friends. Later on, she confesses once more, and he responds saying that he "quite enjoys [her] company", which she gleefully takes as a reciprocation and embraces him. She is excited to think about a simple but secure future with someone she considers a true friend.Both of them prefer to keep their relationship on the down-low in public for various reasons. They appear either as friends or lovers to those who know about their relationship, as they hold no notion of a relationship hierarchy. They continue to maintain their friendships with themselves and others as much as their relationship.

Anabel was the agent assigned to Jimena's case, after having rescued her from her emergence on the Alolan coast as a Faller; the victim of an Ultra Wormhole, much like Anabel herself. Jimena admires her greatly, as she is the type to fall for people who don't look down on her at her lowest. Jimena's biggest secret is that Anabel has been the only person who witnessed her have a complete breakdown when she came to after she was recovered from the coastline after she fell. Because of this, she can drop her facade around Anabel much more easier than other people. She feels very safe around Anabel, yet she is still unsure of how to convey this feeling to her in earnest. They both seem to attract the attention of certain Ultra Beasts, so they tend to run into each other very often. Jimena has grown to be somewhat protective of Anabel, only wishing she had the battle prowess to prove it, as she is merely a novice, still learning Trainer.Both Anabel and Jimena see very eye to eye on their shared struggle on living with memory loss as a result of being Fallers. They both seem to have lost memories that are more specific rather than an outright case of total amnesia. However, this is where much of their similarities end. Jimena's laissez faire and fun-loving energy often gets in the way of serious and stern Anabel's habitual tendency to devote most of her waking hours to her job. As thus, she tends to brush off the free spirited woman's advances fairly often. Jimena just earnestly wishes to see her smile more often, and will always invite her over for a drink after work, even though the answer is usually no. But these interactions and attempts at reaching out are something that Anabel never takes for granted or forgets.This pairing is very much a "right person, wrong time" (at least for now) type of situation. In truth they know that they need to wait for their lives to settle before they commit to anything serious. "Let's meet for drinks after work sometime" becomes their way of telling one another that they're thinking about each other. It is the currency of their budding relationship. "I know you'll say you're busy but being able to have the opportunity to even ask you is all I ever look forward to." Jimena's words resonate within Anabel and she knows to rely on them when her job and the distance between them is too much. How they wish to frame their relationship in the meantime, and who they want to be aware of it is wholly up to them.

While Raine did not have many friends growing up, she has a fond memory of a girl she often shared her lunch with in Johto. She has a longing to re-unite with her, but her only memories of the girl seem to be; that the girl was a bit older than her, frequented a lighthouse, and had a preference for Steel Types.
